Hustler Hollywood Hosts Georgina Spelvin

HOLLYWOOD - It was a dynamic duo that regaled the small audience at Hustler Hollywood last night: Georgina Spelvin, best known for her role as Justine Jones in the classic XXX film The Devil In Miss Jones, and Bay Area author/activist David Henry Sterry.

Spelvin was there to read from her acclaimed autobiography, "The Devil Made Me Do It". Sterry, who assisted The "DMJ" actress with her memoir, was promoting his own book, "Master of Ceremonies: A True Story of Love, Murder, Roller Skates and Chippendales."

Spelvin, looking tiny and a bit ill-at-ease as she approached the microphone, began by recounting her entry into the world of adult films, which occurred after she answered an ad in the Village Voice for production work on "what they call tits 'n' ass movies" in the early '70s. Once on the set, she found herself playing the role of the mother in the softcore film ... and so it began.

"So I played the role," Spelvin told the audience, "and at the end of the thing, one of the lighting technicians came over to me and said, 'Would you be interested in playing the mother? I'm doing this film called High Priestess of Sexual Witchcraft, and I need someone to play the mother.' And he had an actual script ... So obviously, it was a legitimate offer, so I took the script and I read it and it seemed okay and I said, 'Fine, a hundred dollars a day is a hundred dollars a day,' and so I signed up to do this film. And we shot all of these exteriors and running shots - it was high production stuff, with car chases and all this stuff, and then of course we got to the scene I refer to as the Oedipal scene, where the mother seduces the son - and it was in the script, but that's about all it said."

What it required, though, was hardcore sex. Spelvin, ever the professional, simply did what the director called for ... all of which is detailed marvelously in her book.

Spelvin also talked about how she was "outed" as a porn star to her family: Her brother had seen a review of Devil by famous mainstream critic Judith Crist in Newsweek, together with a photo of Spelvin in a bustier, and wanted to double-check whether that was indeed his sister.

A Q&A period followed the readings, with Spelvin relating her first visit to Larry Flynt's offices as part of her work on the "Henri Pachard Project," which she said Hustler Video would be releasing in the next few weeks.

"I was impressed when I saw the Louvre," Spelvin gasped, "but when I saw Larry Flynt's office, I was just ... I can't describe it."

When asked about the differences between having sex with Devil co-star Harry Reems on- and off-camera, Spelvin said: "Well, I never had sex with Harry outside of making films, and having sex in the course of making a film is a totally different sexual experience than real sex."

Reminiscing about Reems, she added, "As an actor, he's incredible. He's just wonderful: Focused, constantly in the scene and never lost his concentration or anything else - and that's not a small consideration when you're making that kind of a movie."

Asked if she regretted her career as an adult actress, Spelvin replied, "I'm very proud of the work that I did because I did the work as work. It doesn't make any difference to me whether I'm drinking from a bottle or kissing a cock; whatever's in the script, I do. And I always try to do what the script calls for, the very, very best that I can. I'm an approval junkie. Pat me on the head and that's all that I need. Yes, I'm glad to try it. Jump off of that 12-foot tower or bureau? Of course I will! I can't believe some of the things I did because it just never occurred to me that I couldn't."

Throat: A Cautionary Tale

CHATSWORTH, Calif. — Vivid Entertainment's Throat: A Cautionary Tale is deeper and far darker than the 1972 X-rated classic that provided its famous inspiration.

Directed by Paul Thomas and starring Sasha Grey, the big-budget reinterpretation of Gerard Damiano's Deep Throat has scored AVN's highest rating.

Like the original film, Vivid's Throat involves the sexual exploits of a woman who discovers that her clitoris is located in a curious place...but that's the only element this movie shares with Damiano's low-budget comedy.

Throat: A Cautionary Tale is slated for March release.

Amanda by Night (1981)

AMANDA BY NIGHT isn't just the finest sex thriller the adult industry ever spawned, but this one also happens to be one of my favorite porn films of all time, especially but not exclusively because I'm a huge fan of its star Veronica Hart. This great lady should seriously consider penning her autobiography someday. Considering she has experienced the adult film industry from every conceivable angle, it would make one hell of a read. Back in her performing days (okay, she still appears in front of the cameras quite regularly but in a non-sex capacity) she was porn's finest thespian bar none and this film is her high watermark.

She's Amanda Heather, high-priced call girl, who finds herself in trouble following the death of colleague Beverley (the late, legendary Lisa DeLeeuw) at the hands of a client she inadvertently enraged. Since Amanda's the one who set up the 'date' in the first place, she may be next on the culprit's hit list. Weary cop Ambrose Hart (perfectly portrayed by the wonderful "Robert Bolla" a/k/a CANNIBAL FEROX's Robert Kerman, 'Tracy' to Veronica's 'Hepburn') gets the unwanted assignment of protecting the prostitute. Once they get past their initial animosity, the two find themselves increasingly attracted towards one another.

This film works on so many levels and is a terrific example of how good adult films often were during the Golden Age. Sex scenes are tremendous, showcasing both animal passion (Hart with callous pimp Jamie Gillis) and romantic tenderness (her initiation of virginal Jon Martin) with equal aplomb, but it's also a cracking thriller and a compelling character study. One shouldn't be too surprised really, as this gem was directed as well as photographed by the multi-talented if vastly underrated "Robert McCallum" a/k/a Gary Graver, one of the greatest storytellers the porn industry has ever seen.

Bio: Annette Haven

a.k.a. Annette Haven, Annette Robinson Annette Haven is labeled as one of the first real stars of the porn industry. She brought a fresh and innocent girl-next-door look, while still being one of the most dazzling ladies to appear in hardcore at the time. She had wonderfully shaped, just-the-right-size breasts that balanced out well with oh-so-sweet ass.

Annette was raised as a Mormon, later rebelling against her upbringing by creating a strong female character for the screen. She was hailed as a role model for porn actresses and everyday women, but also labeled a bitch for her approach to the business. Annette worked as a nurse’s aid, exotic dancer, and massage therapist before getting into porn. She was known to always be extremely professional and classy.

Annette was very selective about which roles she would take as well as who she would work with. Her tenacious work habits led to the higher standard for the films that she appeared in. Annette made her first hardcore performance in 1973 with ‘Lady Freaks’; she was often put into roles where she played the innocent virgin or confident executive. An intelligent actress with the ability to play a range of roles, Annette was hoping to change the way Americans thought about sex. Annette found herself getting more roles as professional women that were secure in their sexuality.

Annette became one of the first actresses elected to the group’s Performer Hall of Fame for X-Rated Critics’ Organization. She also received a Best Supporting Actress award for Adult Film Association of America in 1977 for her work in "Coming of Angels". She has starred in a couple features that have gone down into the hall of fame as well including "Sex World".

Annette Haven Filmography

SexWorld (1978)

(REVIEW ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED IN 1978)

It has been a long time coming, but the line has finally been crossed. That fine line that allows the story to motivate the sex, making it believable and therefore truly erotic and sensual. An entire real motion picture in place of the imitations of wall-to-wall sex with the "fluff" that is considered "story" in most adult films. Instead "Sex World" is a brilliantly produced, directed and written motion picture, lavish in its setting and sensitive and rewarding in its story, and a total turn-on for its audiences! The story deals with Sex World, a dude-ranch type Shangri-La for sex, where people can openly admit their sexual hang-ups and fantasies, and, encouraged by trained counselors, can spend a weekend and experience any sexual desire he or she wishes.

When asked by a quest shortly after his arrival whether their partners would be real people, the social director of Sex World advises the entire group that the sex partners would be whatever or whoever each guest wanted them

to be, and if they would leave all the inhibitions and sexual hang-ups behind for this weekend, they would leave Sex World with a greater understanding of their problems and a deeper insight into their own partners.

A hand-picked cast of superb actors and actresses headed by Sharon Thorpe, who gives a stunning performance as a shy and introverted woman with few friends who, as a last resort, comes to Sex World to find some kind of happiness and love. Her two wishes which she confides to her Sex World counselor are to have someone be kind to her, and to have Johnnie Keys of BEHIND THE GREEN DOOR fame make love to her in exactly the same way Keys performed with Marilyn Chambers in GREEN DOOR. The Technicians and the giant computer at Sex World turn her fantasy into reality and she has a devastating sexual encounter that could turn on a statue.

The rest of the star-studded cast who each lend their own touch to this remarkable film are: Leslie Bovee, Annette Haven, Desiree West, John Leslie, and two beautiful newcomers, Kay Parker and Suzette Holland. Thank you, Producer Billy Thornberg, Director Anthony Spinelli, Writer Dean Rogers, and the long list of supporting actors and actresses and talented technicians who gave us the finished product.

There is no question in this reviewer's opinion that Sex World will become a landmark in adult films, and will lead the way for future producers to follow in this most challenging field of adult films.
