Amanda by Night (1981)

Amanda Heather is a high-class call girl trying to go straight. A last 'favor' for a former pimp/lover results in the death of one of Amanda's young prostitute friends and she is drawn into a spiral of brutality, corruption, violent sensuality, and ever-building tension as the murderer stalks her. Amanda's emotions are brought to the boiling point by the persistent, tormenting questions of Detective Ambrose Harte as he struggles to solve the murders and free Amanda from the treacherous web that is her 'working' life.

AMANDA BY NIGHT isn't just the finest sex thriller the adult industry ever spawned, but this one also happens to be one of my favorite porn films of all time, especiallybut not exclusively because I'm a huge fan of its star Veronica Hart. This great lady should seriously consider penning her autobiography someday. Considering she has experienced the adult film industry from every conceivable angle, it would make one hell of a read.

Back in her performing days she was porn's finest thespian bar none and this film is her high watermark. She's Amanda Heather, high-priced call girl, who finds herself in trouble following the death of colleague Beverley (Lisa DeLeeuw) at the hands of a client she inadvertently enraged. Since Amanda's the one who set up the 'date' in the first place, she may be next on the culprit's hit list. Weary cop Ambrose Hart (perfectly portrayed by the wonderful Robert Bolla, aka CANNIBAL FEROX's Robert Kerman) gets the unwanted assignment of protecting the prostitute. Once they get past their initial animosity, the two find themselves increasingly attracted towards one another.

This film works on so many levels and is a terrific example of how good adult films often were during the Golden Age (roughly spanning the years 1975-1984). Sex scenes are tremendous, showcasing both animal passion (Hart with callous pimp Jamie Gillis) and romantic tenderness (her initiation of virginal Jon Martin) with equal aplomb, but it's also a cracking thriller (considerably better than anything you'll see on late night cable, trust me) and a compelling character study.

Sweet Dreams, Suzan (1979)

MS. PETTY IS A CONFIDENT, AGGRESSIVE SEXUAL DYNAMO!

Watch "Sweet Dreams, Suzan" in our theater

Starring: Rhonda Jo Petty as Suzan also starring: Brooke West, Blair Harris, Dorothy LeMay, Laurien Dominique, Sharon Kane, Star Would and Penelope Jones

To make a good sex film you need a good premise, one that gives the characters in the story a reason for full-tilt fucking. Some of the more familiar devices are: aphrodisiacs, hypnotism, 'magic' talismans that make the wear unbearably horny, sex machines, nymphomania - these are a few of the reasons characters may have jumping into bed and going at it hammer and tongs.

These gimmicks are useful because the performers can pull out all the stops in the sex scenes. If, on the other hand, the set-up has built-in conflict - if, for instance, the guy is trying to bed a woman who is unwilling, angry, or indifferent - the players can't really bust loose.

SWEET DREAMS, SUZAN, with Rhonda Jo Petty in the title role, has a premise that lets everyone in the picture get down as deep and dirty as they want. The sex scenes are dreamed by the leading lady, and as dream characters the performers are not bound by reality. They do what they want, with the result that the sex in this film is intense and the involvement appears genuine.

Taboo (1980)

Original Theatrical Poster for "Taboo" starring Kay ParkerKay Parker portrays a woman whose husband has left her for his young secretary, forcing her and their son to fend for themselves. In order to put her life back together, she takes a secretarial job. After her boss makes an uncomfortable pass at her and she falls into the divorcee's role of meaningless parties and blind dates, she becomes caught in a vortex of lust and passion for her young son Paul.

TABOO is a landmark adult film. It is the first adult film to have seriously focused on the subject of incest and presents it with "serious passion and excitement," according to Adam Film World. In 1983, it also scored another first when it received an unprecedented nod from the prestigious Video Software Dealers Association. This recognition was considered by many as a turning point in the acceptance of adult entertainment by the mainstream video industry. Finally, due to its overwhelming popularity, it was the first adult motion picture with numerous sequels in release.
